An entry of 121 Ewes and Gimmers and 17 Ewe Lambs met a solid trade at last week’s sale of Suffolk females at Beeston.

First prize gimmer was awarded to a daughter of Stockton Sentinel II from David Calvert of Skipton and 1st prize ewe was won by a substitute entry by Collessie Cut Above from Jimmy Douglas’ Aberdeenshire based Cairness Flock.

The top price was 1250gns and was achieved on two occasions both for entries from Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness Flock; the first at this figure was a one crop ewe by Glenhead Grandmaster carrying twins to Cairness Coldplay and she was purchased by John Gould for his Rychmae Flock at Sheen, Buxton. The other at this price was the 1st prize Ewe, a three crop daughter of Collesssie Cut Above and carrying twins to Cairness Almighty due in February who sold to Elfed Williams for his Gweirglodd Flock at Llanfairpwll,
The only other ewe to break the four figure barrier was a one crop daughter of the 22,000gns Plasllewelyn Prince of Wales from Myfyr Evans; this ewe, who earlier won 2nd prize in the show was sold carrying twins to Cairness First Flight and was purchased by Stephen Cobbald of Acorn Farms,
The Champion ewe lamb from the Jeffries’ Dargale Flock created lots of interest and sold for 1100 gns with the hammer being eventually knocked down to Mrs JJ Tooze of Carnwath, Lanarkshire for her Spittal Flock.
The only other to break the four figure barrier was another ewe lamb from the Dargale flock which was also sired by Thurston Millionaire; this one was the choice of Mike Davies & Sons of Brecon who were buying for their Safaddan Flock.
A third ewe lamb from Dargale, sired by Collessie Coldplay out of a Meikleson ewe, sold for 950gns to Michael Waycott of Ashburton, Devon, who was buying for his Longridge Flock.
The top price gimmer was the first prize winner from David Calvert which sold for 680 gns to RJ Shaw of Rugeley, Staffs.
