Suffolk supporters took bidding to 780gns at the annual sale of in-lamb ewes at Borderway Mart, Carlisle last week organised by the West and Central Scotland Suffolk Club where 49 gimmer shearlings averaged £223.
A twin-born gimmer shearling from the Rugley flock of E A and L Jackson, Alnwick, Northumberland made the top price to A and C Watson, Cockermouth, Cumbria. The gimmer is by Rugley Diamond and out of a ewe by Perrinpit Supersire 99. She is in-lamb to Rugley Kenny – the UK’s top index Suffolk sire.
The well known Conveth flock, run by C A Proctor and Co in Scotland’s Suffolk “heartland” at Turriff, Aberdeenshire achieved a best of 480gns for a twin-born gimmer shearling by Strathisla Schumacher and out of a ewe by Als’now Aristocrat (note spelling). She is in-lamb to Deveronside Whistleblower – who has sired sons to 5000gns – and stays in Cumbria with J T Bowe, Wigton.
Matching the bid was S G Benson, Ulverston, Cumbria taking another gimmer shearling from the Conveth consignment. Also by Schumacher – with Muiresk Video Star and Glenhead Ginola behind her – she was also in lamb to the Deveronside tup.
Best for the Jubilee flock of Mark Evans, Keighley, West Yorkshire were two ewe lambs by Strathisla Shirocco at 350gns apiece. Buyers were W and S Airey, Carnforth, Lancashire and A W Crowe, Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria.
Averages: 17 ewes £172; 49 gimmer shearlings £223 and seven ewe lambs £301. (Harrison and Hetherington with Michael Walton).
