The annual show and sale of 3,500 Swaledale sheep, Kirkby Stephen, saw blistering trade with a top price of £720/head for a pen of five ewes from Messrs PE and KA Sowerby, Barras.
Buyer was Messrs WA and A Booth, Feizor, Austwick.
Auctioneers described the trade “phenomenal” from start to finish with ewes averaging £137.89, up £43.73 on the year, and shearlings averaging £152.13, up £72.55 on the year.
The championship was awarded to Messrs R Hutchinson and Sons, Valley Farm, by judge Tom Edgar, Kelso. This pen of 10 ewes went on to realise £520 a piece when selling Alex Dixon, Kirkby Stephen.
Next best and achieving £320 a head was the first prize pen of 10 shearlings from JA Alderson, Barras. Buyer was F Loughridge, Ballymony.
