Tom Rawson enjoys a return to Yorkshire

First, congratulations to our Dewsbury contractor; Andrew Nicholson, on his marriage to Kathryn.

Andrew has been our contractor there since 2005 and has provided an excellent service across all tractor operations, so it was great to see a line of Fendt’s done out in white ribbon leading us into the marquee. The highlight for me was being taken to York races for the stag do in the “Barnsley Party Bus”. The bus turned up with blacked out windows, banging dance music, strobe lights and a bar halfway down the coach complete with two very blonde barmaids. It was certainly good to be back in Yorkshire.

It’s conference season again with an excellent Nuffield event – well done to every speaker, with a special mention to two good friends: Malcolm Fewster and Jim Baird. It was also good to see the return of the Pasture to Profit gathering; it was certainly good to catch up with all my grass-based mates.

This month we have become involved with the herd management of another dairy farm near Oli in Wrexham. When we got the phone call the farmer could have lived anywhere, luckily it is just six miles from our base at Bangor on Dee. Well done and good luck to one of our herdsmen, Tony, as he now heads over there and climbs up the ladder to herd manager. Other highlights include cows at Dewsbury going well on the kale and a great submission rate at Market Rasen.

Tom and Catherine Rawson are involved in three separate dairy farming businesses. The core activity is milking 1,250 cows on four units. Tom is also a partner in a dairy consultancy company
