A strong entry of 1,990 breeding ewes and store sheep sold to a top of £178 a piece at the annual sheep sale, Usk Showground, Gwernesney, at the weekend (30 August).

A strong entry of 1,251 Yearling Ewes sold to an excellent trade despite turbulence in the lamb price.

The top price of £178 was paid by Messrs BK and ZJ Lane, Bryngwenin for a consignment of pure Texel yearlings from Messrs JR Joseph and Co, Lloyney Llanstephan, Brecon.

Next best was a pen of Suffolk x yearlings from JP Sevenoaks and Son, Walterstone, which made £160 when selling to DA Evans and Partners, Llanfair Kilgeddin.

Welsh Mules met excellent demand topping £150 four times for a superb entry from Messrs GG Chandler and Son, Llangattock Lingoed. Buyers were Mr and Mrs P Jones, Llanellen, Mr and Mrs KM Jones, Bettws-Newydd, Mr Rhys Whittingham, Raglan, and Hughes and Davies, Glasbury.

A smart consignment of Texel s Yearlings from Messrs JG Biggs and Son, Penrhos, made £147 apiece. They were purchased by Messrs LD and EA Edwards, Dingestow.

A strong consignment of Suffolk x sheep from Messrs Heath and Cowles, Tregare, was knocked down at £145 to Messrs GD and A Evans, Pencoed.

Flock Ewes

Flock ewes achieved 100% clearance, topping at £129 twice for two-year-old North Country Mules from JP Sevenoaks and Sons, Walterstone.

Both pens sold to Messrs Lewis Brothers, Llangattock Lingoed.

A pen of Suffolk x Mules leveled at £121 for a consignment from Mr S Gamble, Crick, bought by Messrs GD and A Evans, Pencoed.

The sale included the dispersal of two flocks from TJ and AW Bayliss, Dingestow, and Mr HB Phillips and Son, Rogiet.

Four-year-old Texels from Messrs Bayliss met a high of £99, paid by Messrs AC and ED Pugh, Croesyceiliog.

While Messrs Phillips’ consignment topped at £101 for Suffolk x three year olds when selling to Mr G Walters, Bassaleg.

Ewe Lambs

A small entry of ewe lambs sold to a strong trade with a top price of £92 for Suffolk x Mules from Mr J Griffiths, Rhiwderin, purchased by Mr and Mrs TR Harris, Bonvilston.

These were followed by a bid of £82 for Texel crosses from Messrs EC Williams and Son, Usk. Buyer was Messrs DR and JM Morgan, Llanover.

An entry of Zwartable crosses from Mr AFL Haines, Llanvair Discoed, topped at £80 when selling to Upper Cefn Carnau Partnership.

Store Lambs

Store lambs hit a high of £65 for Suffolk x ram lambs from Mr WM Evans, Pengarn. Buyer was Mr AH Rosser, Langstone.

Just shy of this was a similar consignment of mixed lambs from Messrs M and D Haines, Llanvair Discoed, at £64. They were bought by Mr J Tucker, Goitre.

Breeding Rams (40 forward)

Rams met a difficult trade, despite being of good quality. A consignment of smart Suffolk yearlings from Mr and Mrs TR Harris, Bonvilston, topped at £400 three times when selling to Mr and Mrs P Jones, Llanellen, Williams Partners, Glynogwr and Bob Gay Plant Hire, Efail Isaf.

Two powerful Texel yearling rams from JR Joseph and Co, Lloyney Llanstephan, Brecon, also reached the top price of £400 purchased by Messrs RS Thomas and Son, Cowbridge, and Messrs SN and NC Barton, Henllys.

Charollais yearling rams topped at £380 from Mr CH Rees, St Donats, bought by DA Evans and Partners, Llanfair Kilgeddin.

A similar entry from Mr TL Prichard, Llantrisant, made £360 when selling to Messrs E and DJ Thomas and Son, Penpergwm.

Averages: 1,226 yearling ewes, £128.40 (98% clearance); 478 flock ewes, £98.73 (100% clearance); 179 ewe lambs, 69.89 (100% clearance); 71 store lambs, £62.65 (86.6% clearance).
