Warnelview herd dominates Border and Lakeland dairy bull sale

Trade topped at 5,800gns at the Border and Lakeland annual spring show and sale of Holstein and British Friesian bulls at Borderway Mart, Carlisle this week (8 April).

The Warnelview herd featured heavily in the day’s top prices, also scooping the champion and reserve rosettes.

Sale leader was Warnelview Rollio from KJ and CS Wilson, Carlisle, Cumbria. He was tapped out as champion by the judge Michael George from the Brynhyfryd herd in the pre-show sale. This February 2014 born bull is sired by Val-Bisson Doorman and is out of the Regancrest daughter Warnelview Ruby Iota VG86, who gave 11,453kg in her first lactation at 4,97% butterfat and 3.21% protein. Buyer was CD and CA Somerville, Carrutherstown, Dumfriesshire.

Second best at 4,700gns was 17-month-old Annandale Harmony from WJ Armour, Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Sired by the homebred bull Annandale Harmony he is out of the Gillette daughter Holmland Jordan Barb VG85 who is backed by eight generations of VG/EX cows and gave 10,062kg in her first lactation at 4.3% butterfat and 3.3% protein. He was the pick of GW and J Mercer, Bolton, Lancashire.

Not far behind and securing a bid of 4,400gns was Warnelview Rockstar, from the same home as the top priced bull.

This February 2014 born bull is sired by Seagull-Bay Supersire and is a maternal half brother to Warnelview Rex who is currently at the Cogent stud, having been bred from Warnelview Iota Ruby VG86 by Regancrest. He boasts a solid somatic cell count of -12. Buyer was WJ Fisher, Wigtownshire.

E Nixon, Workington, Cumbria, paid 4,000gns for the reserve champion Warnelview Deluxe. Born in September 2013 he is sired by McCormick and is out of the Braedale Bambam daughter Warnelview Bambam Dallas, who gave 9,497kg in her first lactation at 4.5% bf and 3.18% protein.

Next best and selling for 3,800gns was Warnelview Rampart also from Messrs Wilson’s Cumbrian prefix. This September 2013 born bull is sired by McCormick and is out of the Ladino Park Talent daughter Warnelview Talent Ruby 4, EX92, who gave 12,276kg in her third lactation at 4.35% butterfat and 3.44% protein. He was purchased by undisclosed buyer.

Just shy of this at 3,700gns was Warnelview Report sired by Glauco and out of Warnelview Goldwyn Ruby 2 EX94 who gave 13,701kg in her fourth lactation at 5.07% fat and 3.55% protein. Buyer was DW Cannon and Son, Kirkby Thore, Penrith.

The December 2013 born Berryholme Ernie from H Wright and Son, Kendal, Cumbria, made 3,400gns when selling to R and A Agnew, Kirkholm, Stranraer. Sired by Uno he is out of the R-E-W Seaver daughter Mikali Seaver D Erle VG89, who won reserve at All-Britain in 2014 as a two-year-old. She gave 10,917kg in her first lactation at 3.81% butterfat and 3.31% protein.

Following this with a 3,300gns bid was Feizor Gigolo Red from WA and A Booth, Austwick, Lancaster. Sired by T Ladd- P-Red he is out of the Glen-I-Beq Salto daughter Micheret Gigi Salto Red EX92, who won the HM Grand championship at Quebec Spring R and W 2011. He joined WR Wilson and Sons, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire.

Average: 54 bulls, £2,454.38.
