Welsh sheep farmers jump at chance to improve flock genetics

A pioneering project to improve Wales’ national sheep flock is to be extended after nearly 1,500 farmers signed up in the first year.

The Elite Ram Project, which pays for up to half the cost of buying a performance-recorded ram, will run for a second year, it was announced at the Royal Welsh Show.

Wales’ red meat promotions body, Hybu Cig Cymru, said over £180,000 had been paid to farmers so far.

“The project has proven hugely popular among producers who have taken advantage of this scheme,” said Dewi Hughes, HCC’s project executive.

“Farmers on average have received around £316 towards the purchase of a high-index ram, but this is only an initial saving, with further financial benefits coming from using high-performance rams on their flock.”

The Royal Welsh Show runs from 17-21 July.
