Welshpool dairy dispersal sale tops 3,800gns
A packed sale ring dominated by Welsh buyers saw prices up to 3,800gns at the dispersal sale of the milking herd for Kevin Howells at Forden, Welshpool, on the Powys/Shropshire border.
The top price of 3,800gns was for Fordenvale Cut Lady, a freshly calved heifer by Gillette Final Cut out of nine generations of cows in the top two grades of Very Good and Excellent tracing back to the local Garthmyl herd. The buyers were L Davies and Son of Pencader, Carmarthenshire.
The same buyers also paid the second highest price and top price for a cow of 3,000gns for Fordenvale Matson Lady. The second calver by Autumn Ridge Matson had recorded 8,446kgs at 4.63 fat as a heifer and was giving 38kgs daily when sold.
Local milk producers D B A and S C Gethin of Forden, Welshpool, gave 2,800gns for the September calved Fordenvale Velocity Orchid. She was a second calver sired by the stock bull Penrikka Velocity and was the third generation of VG cows. As a heifer she gave 9,550gks at 4.59% fat and when sold she was giving 37kgs daily.
Penrikka Velocity also sired one of 22 cattle purchased by Coleg Llysfasi of Ruthin, Denbighshire. The heifer Fordenvale Velocity Dilly 3 was only a fortnight calved and giving 35kgs daily when sold for 2,500gns. Her dam had given 9,552kgs and her grand dam 11,250kgs.
Coleg Llysfasi’s top priced purchase was the 2,550gns Fordenvale Bolivia Ena 2, a heifer by Magor Bolivia Allen that had calved at exactly 2 years of age. She was off a 9,729kgs dam and 12,450kgs grand dam.
Another of the Penrikka stock bulls sired the 2,500gns Fordenvale Legend Inez, a heifer that had been calved three weeks and giving 33kgs daily. She was a daughter of Penrikka Legend and was purchased by G and M M and T J Davies of Whitland, Carmarthenshire.
The same buyers paid the top price of 2,100gns for an in-calf heifer which was also sired by Penrikka Legend. The close calving heifer in calf to Penrikka Shottlerocks, another stock bull bred by Geoff and Jean Williams of Hay-on-Wye. She was out of a VG86 Drake daughter and the grand dam was a VG86 daughter of Penrikka Lynx.
A total of 43 buyers were successful with many others returning home with empty trailers. Those that bought came from 13 different counties with two-thirds of the cattle staying within the Principality. Several of these buyers purchased in excess of 10 cattle each with Rhadyr Farms of Usk, Monmouthshire, buying 21 cattle. A total of 45 cattle sold at prices of 2,000gns or more.
The sale of the remaining 200 dairy followers will take place on the farm in the Spring on Saturday 27th April 2013.
