What’s new at NSA Sheep 2012?

Sheep farmers and shepherds visiting NSA Sheep 2012 will be able to brush up on a variety of technical skills at a series of working demonstrations designed to help visitors improve their skills.

The industry’s biennial event is to be staged by the National Sheep Association at the Three Counties Show Ground, Malvern on Wednesday 4 July.

New for the 2012 event is a display of five different carcasses for retail, food service and export, managed by processor, Dunbia. The processor will demonstrate how the carcasses differ and subsequently how important it is for farmers to forward in-spec lambs to enable it to satisfy its customers’ needs and requirements. Dunbia staff will be available throughout the day to discuss with producers the potential benefits of targeting specific markets.

Visitors will be able to watch the Tornado Wire Fencer of the Year award, featuring more than a dozen professional fencing contractors testing their skills against their fellow competitors and demonstrating the advantages of good-quality fence erection. This competition provides the two-man teams with three hours to erect 70 linear metres of Tornado high-tensile stock fence.

Visitors will also be able to test their stock judging skills in the National Lamb Selection open competition, staged on the EBLEX stand in the Avon Hall. The winner will receive £150 and the highest-placed entry from 21 years and under will be awarded £75.

The SCOPS area will offer visitors the opportunity to get to grips with worm resistance management, with Novartis Animal Health staging practical demonstrations, while ASDA will be running lamb cookery demonstrations throughout the day.
