1959 Kodel combine could be rarest in the UK

You may be lucky enough to have a rare piece of farm machinery in the back of one of your barns. You may even have something that would make a collector gasp with admiration.

But the chances are that you haven’t got anything quite as unusual as Brian Shaw’s combine.

Mr Shaw farms at Wathstones Farm, Newby Wiske, Northallerton, North Yorkshire. He bought a 1959 Kodel & Bohm Favorit combine in 1961 and has cut about 120ha/year with it, up until 20 years ago. He’s now just about finished refurbishing it and plans to cut 4-8ha this year.

The combine is astonishingly rare. Only two were ever imported into Britain and this is one of them. However, Mr Shaw doesn’t know if the other UK one still exists.

It has a Fordson Industrial engine and an 8ft 6in cut and is very highly engineered for its age. It’s impossible to get spares for it so Mr Shaw has to make anything that needs replacing. It’s also so rare that there’s no information on the internet about it.

So if you are the owner of the only other Kodel & Bohm combine in the UK, Mr Shaw would be very pleased to hear from you.
