Toyota builds wacky Tonka-style Hilux pickup

Toyota has rebuilt its hard-as-nails Hilux as a full-scale Tonka toy.

The Hilux Tonka Concept has been created by Toyota Australia to help mark the high-riding off-roader’s breakthrough in becoming the country’s best-selling vehicle in 2016.

The new concept was designed, assembled and tested by Toyota Australia’s 150-strong product planning and development division.

Underneath the dramatic black-and-yellow livery is a top-of-the-range production Hilux – an SR5 double-cab with a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine.

A rugged bash plate made from 6mm-thick alloy guards the sump and other vital parts.

In the load deck, a removable tubular frame keeps all the gear in place, including fuel cans, a fire extinguisher, axe, shovel and high-lift jack.

The Hilux Tonka Concept is not destined for dealer showrooms, but single-cab models start at £22,965 and double-cab models top out at £35,275 including VAT.
