Anyone looking for a vehicle that drives like a normal truck on the road, but which combines off-road ability rivalling the Unimog with a body/payload capacity of nearly 16t, could by tempted by the new Mercedes-Benz Zetros.

It has a 7.2-litre engine delivering 223hp and 1300Nm, driving through nine-speed main and two-speed transfer transmissions, with option of a six-speed Allison automatic.

Permanent drive is to all four or six wheels with a full set of diff locks. Many mechanical and cab components are common to other Mercedes trucks, allowing easy repair and maintenance.

It will be sold in the UK alongside the Unimog, with RHD production due to start by the end of the year. Pricing has not been finalised – MB says it will be less than an Actros and a 6×6 Actros is £67,000.
