as Code of Practice launched
THE NFU launched its Framework Code of Practice for Dairy Farms at the Dairy Event.
Prepared by the NFU, the Milk Development Council, the NFU for Scotland and Ulster Farmers Union, the document seeks to provide a benchmark standard for dairy companies drawing up their own welfare code of practice.
One of the first companies to use the document was midlands dairy group Avonmore Foods which launched its welfare code of practice at the event. Monthly self assessment will be backed up by an annual visit to ensure producers are meeting standards.
The company, which currently sources 35% of its requirements direct from producers, says it wants reassurance that its milk has been produced under conditions which meet legal requirements and recognise the nutritional, behavioural and welfare requirements of dairy cattle.
Milk buyer Unigate is also set to relaunch its own welfare code of practice at next months South West Dairy Event. The move comes in an effort to ensure the scheme takes proper account of good welfare.n
