DAIRY farmers with wholesale quota face a national super-levy bill of about £38m, according to the Intervention Board.
Milk production figures for March show 1.21bn butter-fat-adjusted litres were delivered, 28.8m (2.44%) litres over quota. That brings the cumul-ative surplus for the milk year to a massive 151m litres, 1.09% above quota, one of the biggest overshoots on record.
Provisional figures suggest 15.5m litres will be knocked off that, due to producers converting from direct to wholesale quota. But temporary conversion back the other way could cancel that out, says the board.
Each producer will pay a levy of 25.53p/litre on surplus milk.
