£6000 fine for waste dumping
WELSH abattoir firm Oriel Jones and Sons has been fined a total of £6000 at Carmarthen Magistrates Court for illegally depositing controlled waste on land.
The firm, which operates at Llanybydder, Carmarthenshire, pleaded guilty to three charges relating to an incident in May, 1996, when a Llanydydder resident complained that blood, guts and gut entrails had been deposited on a field opposite his house.
The Environment Agency, which brought the prosecution, investigated and collected samples from the land, which were later confirmed by veterinary analysis to be of bovine origin. The tissue was eventually traced back to the Teifi Park abattoir.
The court was told that while the spreading of cattle blood and stomach contents on land can be permitted, spreading meaty deposits is strictly forbidden. The agency also expressed concern that sheep were grazing in the field where the waste had been deposited. *
