ENTERPRISING companies could receive up to 50,000 through the Home-Grown Cereals Authoritys 2002 Enterprise Awards.

Established in 1995, these awards provide funding for exciting new ideas that will increase consumption of wheat, barley, oats or rye.

There is a total of 200,000 up for grabs, with individual awards ranging from 5000 to 50,000.

Last years projects are expected to increase cereal usage by 94,000t over three years, says the HGCA.

Initiatives ranged from an investigation into pig diets by the UKs biggest pig processors, Dalehead Foods, to a cereal and herbal heat pack treating aches and pains, from Intelex.

Awards co-ordinator, Rebecca Geraghty, says: “We have had a lot of interest from small companies already this year, which is heartening.

“But we would like to see more projects from the meat and industrial sectors, as these can have a substantial indirect effect on cereal consumption.”
