2000 bug complacency

ACTION taken by farmers to guard against the millennium computer bug is worryingly low, according to MAFF and the NFU.

At the launch of a joint initiative aimed at raising awareness of the potential problems, junior farm minister Lord Donoughue said: "This is an issue which the whole industry needs to take seriously. It is vital that everyone takes action now."

He said that many did not realise that a whole range of appliances and equipment on the farm and the food supply chain could be damaged.

At the launch NFU president Ben Gill urged all farmers and growers to study a series of nine leaflets produced for the initiative which outline measures to combat the bug.
