Lord Hesketh, the Conservative party treasurer, has decided to sell Easton Neston, his 3300-acre estate near Towcester, Northants.

He said the estate, which had been in the Hesketh family for almost 470 years, was becoming too expensive to maintain.

Knight Frank the property agent which is handling the sale has put a price tag of £50m on the estate.

Anybody with deep enough pockets will get a Grade 1 listed stately home, the entire village of Hulcote, which has 20 houses as well as Towcester National Hunt racecourse.

Speculation on potential bidders for the property has already started.

Footballer David Beckham, who is expected to return from Spain to England next season, has been mentioned, but the asking price would leave little change from his estimated £65m fortune.

A more realistic candidate might be the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is reported to be worth over £7bn.

But the chance to own a well known racecourse might also tempt the Irish racing fanatics and business duo JP McManus and John Magnier who have accumulated £1bn between them, and are already major shareholders in Manchester United.
