Abattoir boss assault fine

ABATTOIR manager Roderick Crowther has been fined £200 and ordered to pay £50 compensation and £50 costs by Huddersfield Magistrates Court after being found guilty of physically assaulting a Meat Hygiene Service inspector.

Mr Crowther, a director of the firm DS Cooper, assaulted the official veterinary surgeon last Sept when she tried to serve a Food Safety Act hygiene improvement notice.

The case was the first MAFF prosecution of its kind. Commenting on the outcome, Junior farm minister Jeff Rooker said: "Verbally or physically assaulting people who are carrying out a job required by law is simply not tolerable. We will not hesitate to prosecute if people assault or intimidate our staff."
