Abattoirs on the agenda

THE Meat and Livestock Commission is expected to press on with its plan for a rationalisation scheme for the abattoir sector.

It was due to decide last week, having completed a five-week consultation period, but the matter was taken off the agenda due to the BSE crisis.

But a decision was anticipated when commissioners met in Milton Keynes yesterday (Thursday).

Though not wishing to pre-empt the outcome, a spokesman said, given the current turmoil in the meat industry, a controlled removal of capacity could be more important than ever. &#42
