Agribusiness eyes up Romania
A CONSORTIUM of some of the biggest names in the agribusiness sector are preparing to demonstrate their skills to the backward Romanian farmer, reports The Guardian.
The Romanian government has agreed a deal with US agribusiness which will bring Monsanto, Cynamid, DuPont and John Deere to the country.
The big firms will pump seeds, fertiliser, pesticides and machinery into a demonstration site in the southern part of the Romania.
The indigenous farmers will receive the proceeds of one third of the yield from the land they rent out, while the consortium will keep two-thirds.
Local farmers have also been guaranteed a minimum income level – the proceeds of 2.5 tonnes per acre.
