Almost started oilseed rape
CHARLIE STEWART, manager of Mertoun estates near St. Boswells in the Borders, tried to start oilseed rape on Monday (13 August).
“We started yesterday, did one round and it was barely ripe. It was off the moisture meter.” There are 240ha (600 acres) of Pronto and Synergy. He says the Pronto looks better of the two, but yields will be down on last year.
Earlier, 200ha (500 acres) of Manitou and Siberia six-row feed barley yielded below average. Manitou at 6.8t/ha (2.75t/acre) and Siberia at 5.7t/ha (2.3t/acre).
They budget for 8t/ha (3.25t/acre). “The Siberia was particularly disappointing, but it did not go into a good seed bed and there were not good conditions during the grain fill period.”
The 485ha (1200 acres) of spring barley should be ready in a week. After that there is 485ha (1200 acres) of winter wheat.
