Alternative outlets

IF live calf exports are ever halted, there are still a wide range of alternative outlets for the 1.3 million calves available each year from the UK dairy herd for veal and beef production.

"But if they are kept on the farm and reared for either veal or beef, make sure first that there is a market for the end-product," warned ADAS beef specialist Neil Pickard.

He was speaking at a Cargill conference last week held at ADAS Bridgets, near Winchester, Hants, Mr Pickard said that the question also needed to be asked whether keeping stock on added to the value of selling calves at two weeks old at perhaps £70 each or less.
