Alternative to salt

AN easier-to-use alternative to salt is now available for covering the surface of maize clamps.

Launched at the event, Top Coat can help reduce shoulder waste and maintain feed value, according to manufacturer C and &#42 Nutrition.

The liquid is mixed 50/50 with water, then applied to the clamp surface using a watering can or knapsack sprayer before sheeting. It works by removing oxygen from the top layer of silage, and preventing growth of organisms responsible for aerobic spoilage.

Top Coat is supplied in 20 litre drums, costing £44 and sufficient to treat 100 square metres of surface area. An average maize clamp would require two to three cans.
