LOCAL government bureaucracy is delaying the granting of planning permission for innovative new uses of redundant farm buildings, according to initial results from over 1000 responses to the ADAS Farmers Voice Survey.
It shows that planning permission is the greatest obstacle for farmers seeking to diversify.
"For some businesses, the only route to survival will be a non-farming one," ADAS business management consultant Ciaran Gannon told the conference. "The importance and relevance of appropriate business diversification in the rural context, and specifically when linked to farm businesses, needs to be recognised by planning authorities." *
