Another Scottish abattoir up for sale

BIGGAR Quality Meats is for sale with liabilities estimated at more than £1.5 million. Coopers & Lybrand of Edinburgh are the liquidators. A buyer is likely to be announced before the end of the week.

The Scotsman says further rationalisation of the Scottish abattoir industry seems on the cards. The liquidation follows that of Lockerbie Meat Packers (LMP), which went into receivership late last year. Minmar 408, which bought LMP, could be interested.

Farmers will view fewer abattoirs as a mixed blessing.
