Aphid-eating wasp project now in-field
NATURALLY-occurring parasitic wasps can be lured into cereal fields by sex pheromones in order to boost the biological control of aphids, according to a MAFF LINK programme, partly-funded by the HGCA and IACR-Rothamsted.
A synthetic aphid pheromone produced in the laboratory was used to encourage the aphid-eating wasps into crops. The strategy is now being tested under farm conditions, with pheromone lures placed in field margins. *
