Aquaculture to overtake cattle-rearing

FISH farms will soon feed more people than cattle producers, according to the Worldwatch think tank.

Aquaculture is the fastest-growing sector of the world food economy, reports The Guardian.

Production has climbed from 13 million tonnes of fish in 1990 to 31m tonnes in 1998, and growing at 11% a year.

Cattle ranching, which provides, 80% of the worlds beef, tripled in the 40 years up to 1990, but has run out of productive land, says the report.

And while beef requires 7lb of grain to produce 1lb of grain, fish needs only 2lb of feed to gain 1lb in weight.

The report predicts that fish farming will double in size over the next 10 years to meet the worlds growing protein requirements.
