Arable aid payouts

SEVEN farms in England received arable area payments totalling more than £500,000 each last year.

Some of the seven may even have had over £1m but farm minister, William Waldegrave said it was not possible to list those for reasons of confidentiality.

He was replying to written Commons questions by shadow farm minister Dr Gavin Strang, who wanted a breakdown of the figures. This showed 45 farms were paid between £250,000 and £499,999, 599 £100,000-£249,999 and 2325 £50,000-£99,999.

Another 5164 were paid £25,000-£49,999, 9712 £10,000-£24,999, 6577 £5000-£9999 and 21,345 up to £4999.

In contrast, no farmer in Wales received over £100,000. There was one in the over £75,000 category, 11 in the £50,001-£75,000 bracket; 25 £25,001-£50,000, 21 £20,001-£25,000, 46 £15,001-£20,000, 79 £10,001-£15,000, 148 £5001-£10,000 and 2177 under £5000. &#42
