The first day of auctioneer AJWilsons annual "back calving" sale at Paisley saw Friesian cows average £693 and heifers £768. The next day proceedings moved to Kilmarnock, where black-and-white cows averaged £761 (down £146 on last year). Heifers levelled at £749 (down £153). More stock and sales reports on page 33

Daughter of promising high type Blackstar son Seabreeze Goldstar from Holland, who will have Dutch daughters on show at the HFS Progeny Showcase on Apr 27. Goldstar is available priced at £16 a straw from Dairy Daughters.

This heifer from the Amber herd of J Hole and Sons, Derbyshire, took the championship at the North East Regional Association of Shorthorn Breeders gathering last week. Freshly-calved, she made 1180gns, on a day when in-calf and in-milk heifers averaged £936. More details p37. (John D Thornborrow with Craven Cattle Marts)

This Taarup KD185C mower conditioner is one of three KD mounted models introduced by Kverneland UK for the 1995 season. All are twin-drum machines fitted with three blades/drum and a safety break-away device, and are designed to swing manually to the rear for transport; the KD185C differs from its two sister models, the KD165 and KD185, in that it is equipped with a Y-tine conditioning unit. Working widths and prices of the three mowers are 1.65m (5ft 5in) at £1735, 1.85m (6ft 1in) at £2110 and 1.85m at £3900, respectively.

Charolais bull Heywood Invader is one of several performance recorded animals from different beef breeds forward at the south west MLC/Signet Beef Breeder BLUP bull sale to be held at Taunton market on Apr 29, 1995. Invader clocked in at 782kg at 400 days and has a Beef Value of CH48, which puts him in the top 1% of all Charolais bulls recorded by Signet.The sale, for Signet recorded bulls only, is being held to offer suckler producers the chance to buy with confidence performance recorded sires. Mounting a moisture meter to the underside of the combines tank elevator enables the driver to keep a check on grain moisture levels in the field, on the move. The RDS Technology unit, designed for use with the firms Ceres yield monitor, automatically records moisture information which can be downloaded on to the farms computer along with yield mapping data. Price of the moisture sensor is £600.

National Head Injuries Association, "Headway", has started an initiative to increase workplace awareness of head injury; it also hopes to encourage workers to take effective preventative measures to reduce head injury accidents. The registered charity, established in 1979, provides community-based services and activities through 110 local groups and 38 day centres around the country.
