A feature of Mondays store sale at Cutcombe Auction, Exmoor, was the brisk trade for heifers, which peaked at £670 for a Charolais. Limousin heifers, meanwhile, made to £564, and Devons to £515. The auctioneers suggest demand may be coming from buyers who have switched from steers, having filled their BSP allocation. (Phillips Livestock.)

West Sussex producer James Seller has made only a quarter of the forage he needs to feed his 440 ewes at drought-hit Park Farm, Arundel, this winter. To make up the shortfall he will offer the mainly January-lambing ewes a straw-based diet when housed seven weeks before lambing. The ad-lib untreated barley straw will be supplemented with high energy, 20% protein concentrate (see p48).

Rain falling prior to last weekends multi-breed sheep sale at Bishops Castle, Shropshire, helped the trade, ensuring all sections were up £4 to £5 on last year. The 6500-head entry returned averages of £67 for yearling ewes, £46 for ewe lambs; £64 for two-year-old ewes; and £38 for three- to four-year-old ewes. Rams, meanwhile, levelled £200. (Halls)
