Third cut October silage yielded 22 bales/ha (nine bales/acre) last week on this 9ha (22-acre) one-year grass ley at 218ha (540 acre) Great and Middle Brampton Farms, Madley, Herefordshire. Alastair and Duncan Matthews will feed this silage to their 130-head of beef and 80-cow suckler herd this winter. Contractors, EJ Richards and Sons, Llanigon, Powys, baled and wrapped the silage after wilting overnight.

Dairy producers seeking an alternative to caustic-treated or rolled wheat for including in total mixed rations have the choice of a new high energy feed from Cargill. The companys Dr Wesley Ewing considers the pellet, priced at £142-£145/t, is a cost-effective route to boosting milk protein. Based on ground wheat and barley, and beans, it contains 45% starch and 15% protein.
