As elsewhere, Hope, Derbys, saw an easier store cattle trade last Friday, reflecting continuing uncertainties in the beef market. The fortnightly sale, which had nearly 100-head forward, saw steer averages of £395 for Limousins, £451 for Blondes and £352 for Charolais. (Bagshaws.)

The quality of the 80 cattle at Gloucesters Christmas show was described by the auctioneers as the best for 10 years. The champion beast, shown by David Bishop, was a 460kg Limousin cross heifer. It sold for 245p/kg (£1127) to J Madeley, Glewstone. The champion Charollais lambs made 155.7p/kg and the top pigs went for £120 apiece. (For primestock show round-up, see page 34)

Carcasses from Smithfield FarmTech supreme beef champion and reserve bought by Mutchmeats, Witney, Oxfordshire. The champion weighed 355kg deadweight, the reserve 324.5kg dw and both graded at E 4L. The reserve will be sold at a butchers in Witney while the champion is to be auctioned together with the champion of the Ulster show to raise money for the BBC Salvation Army appeal.
