Janet and Peter Padfield with some of their Hayleys herd, 146 of which will be sold next Wednesday (Jun 4) at Epping, Essex. More than 60 females have PIN indexes in the breeds top 1% and 19 are over +£100 PIN. Peter Padfield attributes much of the herds success to its American bloodlines. And the buyer spending the most at this years two Hayleys sales will be able to visit the USA, courtesy of a free flight.

Spectacular yellow rust on untreated winter wheat trials at pbi Cambridge highlights big differences between varieties. Breeder Stephen Brown (left), seen here with colleague John Howie, believes this seasons attack by the YR17 strain of the disease is the most aggressive for many years. It is proving especially useful in distinguishing differences in resistance between varieties with similar NIAB ratings, he says. Riband and Rialto for example both merit a five on the one to nine NIAB scale, but the latter is displaying far fewer symptoms.

Blight spray goes onto first early Minerva potatoes on D T Nicholls Varfell Farm near Penzance late last week. The crop, which had been established under plastic, was receiving a second spray of Shirlan (fluazinam) as a precaution. The 12m Knight sprayer with Degania sleeve boom and front and rear tanks was designed to cope with the regions small, sloping fields. Total potato area on the farm is 90ha.

Changes to Sulky GC drills marketed by Reco include larger capacity hoppers to ease drill filling from bulk bags. Hopper sizes on the power harrow-mounted and solo GC drills rise by about 60%, says Reco, to result in 525kg and 730kg capacities, respectively, for the 3m and 4m models. Complementing higher capacities is a 110 degree opening double hopper lid and safer access safer via a wider rear platform.
