Arthurian island yields ‘new’ apple

A SINGLE apple tree growing on a tiny Welsh island steeped in history and legend has been identified as an unknown variety.

Fruit was taken from a gnarled tree growing on Bardsey, said to the site of Avalon where King Arthur was taken after being wounded in his final battle.

Experts could not identify the pink-and-cream striped lemon-scented variety, and decided to name it the Bardsey Island apple, reports the Daily Mail.

The island was colonised by monks in the sixth century and it is believed the century-old tree is a descendant of their original orchard.
