HIGH PIN values were a big factor in the sound trade for stock at the dispersal of Ken and Ros Egglestons Hollytree Holstein Friesian herd, with over 80% of the offering in the breeds top 1% on genetic merit.
But the crowd that gathered at Long Clawson, Leics – Mr Eggleston is a director of Stilton cheese makers Long Clawson Dairies – waited until late in the day to produce its most spirited display of bidding for a product of the MOET satellite herd programme.
The heifer that caused the stir and sold for the top price of 2200gns was Hollytree Gibbon Marissa, a daughter of the successful French bull Gibbon and out of the outstanding 14,000kg cow Moet Aerostar Marissa.
With a PIN value of +£124 and ITEM +£129, this five-month-old calf heads for C * Spencer and Sons Holspen herd at Mapperley Plains, Notts.
T C Yuill and Son, Strathaven, Lanarkshire paid 1900gns for Hollytree Lexus Peg 3rd, a 9400kg heifer out of a Chief Mark dam, for their Netherside herd and 1750gns for Hollytree Mascot Tara 2nd, a February -born calf (PIN +£97).
Averages: 97 cows and calved heifers £823; 26 served heifers £777 and 32 recently served and maiden heifers £581. (Norton and Brooksbank).
