Baa-coding to keep rustlers at bay

A FARMER facing financial ruin because of sheep rustlers has launched his own method of keeping tabs on his sheep using microchips and a satellite tracking system.

Simon Bland, 30, from Penrith, Cumbria, farms 48.56ha (120 acres) of remote fell land. He has lost more than £50,000-worth of stock over the past five years.

He is developing chips with his fiancee, Dr Jane Barker, which can be attached
to sheep so that if they are stolen they can be traced.
