Backing for Welsh co-op

NEW Welsh milk co-operative Llaeth Cymreig claims to have the backing of 200 producers with 80m litres of quota.

But it is expecting to handle only about 10m litres a year until more direct supply deals with new customers can be agreed.

The new venture takes over from West Wales Milk Producers, an informal group supplying Dansco and ACC, which could not expand because neither customer could take larger volumes. "The new co-op will seek new customers for milk from farmers who were not able to join WWMP," said Roger Routley, one of eight members. "Some markets have already been found and we are still talking to other processors."

Prices should be announced in July to allow members time to cancel existing contracts and sell through the co-op from October. The long-term aim is to use Objective 1 funding to move into milk processing. &#42
