Bacon still strong
DEMAND for UK bacon is strong and improving, said Smithfields bacon carcass judge, James Blakeney.
In his role as managing director of the south west-based curers Case & Sons, he has noticed a 5% increase in sales in as many years.
His theory is backed by Meat and Livestock Commission data: consumption is forecast to reach 424,000t this year.
"British bacon has improved its market share by 4% to 49% in the past five years," said Mr Blakeney. "This is because the consumer has become more adventurous and is prepared to try dishes which can be enhanced with bacon."n
