Bad weather hits US nut production
BAD weather took its toll on US nut production last year with a 25% fall, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Total nut production ran out at 903,000 tonnes, the USDA said in its annual Non-citrus Fruits and Nuts Preliminary Summary.
Hazelnuts saw the biggest fall in production – it came off 67% to 15,500 tonnes. Pecans dropped 54% to 155 million.
Walnuts fell 18% to 220,000 tonnes, while almonds dropped 31% to 520m pounds.
Pistachios rose 4% to 188m tonnes.
