- UK delivered and futures prices up, especially barley
By Wednesdays close, 2000 crop LIFFE wheat futures were up nearly 2/t. However, prices eased on Thursday and ended the week around 1 higher.
UK delivered wheat prices were 1-2 higher over the week. Delivered barley prices were around 2 higher, helped by immediate interest for barley at ports.
- New-crop 2001 prices close to unchanged
Prices were close to unchanged over the week. This meant that new-crop prices slipped to around 7 above 2000 crop.
- Euro loses 1p against Sterling
The Euro slipped to below 60p again last week, around 1p lower than the previous week. This leaves sterling at the equivalent of DM3.26. Against the US dollar it slipped 1US¢ to $1.42.
- 20-50% of arable land unplanted – NFU
The NFU “Dossier of Chaos” was released on Thursday to highlight the impact of the bad weather and floods on farming across the country. It notes that “estimates of unplanted land vary from region to region and depend partly on soil type”.
The report goes on to suggest that “between 20% and 50% of arable land remains unplanted”.
