Barley yield down but OK

JOHN MCNIVEN, who farms at South Lambieletham near St. Andrews, started combining winter barley on Friday.

Twenty hectares (50 acres) had a monitored yield of 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), which is below the farm average of 9.4t/ha (3.8t/acre).

“It is surprising how well it did in the circumstances. It was drilled in atrocious conditions, and in March it was still brown.”

It was combined at 19% so will have to be dried. The specific weight was about 70kg/hl. the farm is on medium soil.
