Baroness asks for new powers

BARBARA YOUNG, chair of English Nature, the governments nature conservation watchdog, sets out the need for new powers to deal with erring farmers reports The Guardian.

These include the powers of entry on to protected sites and tougher penalties for damage to Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

In the articles she quotes several examples where these sites have been damaged.

One included is where a dairy farmer drained part of a protected wet meadow, allowed the rest to go to scrub and refused to deal with English Nature.
