Bean buying tips
WINTER bean growers are urged to ensure seed has a final germination figure before buying this autumn.
Cracking problems stemming from the hot, dry harvest have sent germinations tumbling. But merchant organisation UKASTAs recent application for the standard on 4000t of certified seed to be cut from 85% germination to 75% means supplies should not be limited, says Michael Bearman of PBI Cambridge.
"There is plenty of time for merchants to get samples cleaned and dressed, and then get a full germination test," he said.
There is no need for early movement seed with provisional germination figures," said Mr Bearman.
