FARM MINISTER Nick Brown is confident that the export ban on UK beef exports will be lifted by the end of the year.

Mr Browns comments were made in Brussels after a positive report by European Union veterinary experts on the UKs slaughtering and meat inspection facilities.

The Financial Times reports that Britain has a strong chance of winning political support from fellow EU members for the “date-based” scheme that would allow exports of meat from cattle born after August 1996.

This would cover virtually all beef cattle in the UK. But exporters would also be required to show that the mother of an animal had lived from more than six months after the birth and had not contracted BSE.

Germany is known to be still concerned about lifting the ban. But Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden would be in favour.
