Beef farmers welcome supermarket probe

THE National Beef Association (NBA) has welcomed the prospect of an investigation into supermarket pricing by the Monopolies & Mergers Commission.

Robert Forster, NBA chief executive, said the MMC should concentrate on the damage done to the supply chain by predatory supermarket practices.

He warned of the dangers of the inquiry becoming overly concerned about making unfavourable comparisons between UK food retail prices and those on the Continent.

The NBA claims predatory pricing at both farm and abattoir level has forced companies supplying supermarkets to provide goods at derisory margins or even a loss.
