BEET pulp was usually added to grass at a rate of 50kg/t ensiled. Each kg ensiled absorbed 1-2kg of effluent.

"Again there is evidence that beet pulp improves silage fermentation by lowering the pH and ammonia nitrogen concentration because of its sugar content," says Dr Keady. "But work at Hillsborough shows that when an equivalent amount of beet pulp is ensiled or fed as a concentrate with the untreated silage there is no difference in animal performance."
