Beetles about…

OILSEED rape crops are suffering more cabbage stem flea beetle damage than in recent years, following the pests widespread appearance in crops this harvest.

If damage is severe and the crop is visibly failing to outgrow it, treat with a pyrethroid insecticide, advises ADAS.

Where the shiny, active, greenish-black beetles are obvious in relatively unaffected crops, a spray may still be needed later in the season, it adds. That is because the pest lays eggs both on and in the soil, and larvae can cause damage when they emerge.
