Belgian farmers riot over dioxin pay-outs

ABOUT 3500 Belgian farmers took to the streets of Brussels over the weekend demanding more government help to combat the dioxin contamination crisis.

It is reported in The Times that demonstrators attacked cameramen covering the event and tried to storm the Belgian parliament.

More than 2500 police were deployed, and three people were arrested.

Belgian farm produce has been banned in many countries after cancer-causing dioxin was found in meat products.

The government fell last month largely because of public anger at its handling of the crisis.
