BELTEX sheep enthusiasts, including many from the mainland, upheld the strong demand for rams at the Irish Beltex Sheep Breeders Club show and sale at Portadown.
A feature of the day was the dispersal of the Carricbrack flock owned by Ian and Noel Maxwell – and it was a gimmer shearling by the successful sire Shogun that led the trade for the Maxwell partnership at 1450gns. The call came from George Allen, Portadown to secure this shearling which was female champion at the National Beltex Show in Maynooth last year.
A 1996-bred ewe, Penywern Penelope which was female champion and reserve overall at the 1996 Royal Highland Show, was also bought by Mr Allen at 1000gns.
Her two ET-bred sons were also on offer. Both were by Shogun – one made 1000gns to Norman Wilson, Donegal while another made 800gns to Mr McCandless, Donegal.
The Ulster Bank championship was won by Alan Lecky with a shearling ram from his Dergview flock at Castlegerg. This Challenger son made 680gns. (Automart)
